Delta-8 and delta-10 THC are separated only by two digits, and it would be easy to assume they are generally the same thing; however, seasoned THC connoisseurs know there are some subtle yet important differences between these two compounds, which are growing in popularity. 

Delta-9 THC has dominated the cannabis consumer product market in recent years, but with more research devoted to uncovering the benefits of additional compounds, you have likely seen new products featuring delta-8 and delta-10 as well.

What Is Delta-8?

Delta-8 might be best described as delta-9’s slightly less intense little sister. Like delta-9 THC, delta-8 is found in marijuana but in much smaller quantities than delta-9. 

Because delta-8 can also produce a refreshing, mellow, and uplifting high, it was only a matter of time before some smart people in lab coats figured out how to get around its limited quantities in marijuana by producing it synthetically from hemp instead.

Delta-8 THC made from hemp can be used in a wide variety of products, from gummies to vapes, and it is available to purchase legally in many states thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill. If you are unfamiliar with the Farm Bill, this is the landmark legislation that paved the way for hemp-derived delta-9 THC to be sold legally, and both delta-8 and delta-10 products often fall under this area as long as they are extracted from hemp with less than 0.3% THC.

The Farm Bill did not address or name delta-8 and delta-10 specifically, so in some states, legislators are working to clarify how the law treats these compounds, and we will likely see it spelled out in future pieces of legislation.

What Is Delta-10?

Delta-10 is similar to delta-8 as a compound that occurs naturally in marijuana but in small quantities. We simply cannot extract enough delta-10 THC from marijuana to make it viable in large-scale manufacturing of products. However, like delta-8, it can be produced synthetically from hemp, so all systems are go for more delta-10 products in the future.

The difference between delta-8 and delta-10 comes down to the way its atoms are arranged. The number in the naming convention describes where the double carbon bond occurs. In the former, it is in the eighth position of the chain; in the latter, it is in (you guessed it) the 10th.

Setting all that science aside, you may be thinking, “Why should this matter to me? Is there any difference I will notice if I use delta-8 THC instead of delta-10 THC, or vice versa?” 

There are some important distinctions between the effects of delta-8 and delta-10, which could guide your decision-making about the times you might want to use each one.

What Is the Difference Between Delta-8 and Delta-10?

Both delta-8 and delta-10 provide the buzzy effects of THC, but you may not want the same level of “mellow” at a concert as you might during a lazy afternoon at the park, for example. Generally, the two compounds are distinguished from each other in this way:

• Delta-8 is the reliable high for occasions where you are looking to feel focused, relaxed and mellow.
• Delta-10 is the reliable high for occasions when an uplifting and euphoric buzz is desired.

Bear in mind any time you try out a new product, whether it’s a delta-8 gummy or a delta-10 vape, you should always follow the manufacturer’s recommended guidelines for dosing. Play it safe by starting out with smaller doses and seeing how your body reacts to the THC.
