When looking at hemp-derived products, it’s easy to classify them as CBD or THC products. Many THC products are delta 9 THC, but did you know there are different types of THC? You can purchase THC products in more than just delta 9!

The THC cannabinoid has so much more to offer than you probably realize. We’re going to take a look at just how complex the THC cannabinoid is and what each type of THC has to offer. By the end of this, you’ll have the knowledge you need to give THC products a try! 

What Is THC?

THC is a cannabinoid that is found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. A cannabinoid is a chemical compound found in Cannabis Sativa, and there have been more than 100 cannabinoids discovered by scientists over the years.

The cannabinoid THC is short for its scientific name, tetrahydrocannabinol. The chemical composition of THC has psychoactive properties that give most users a “high.” THC can affect your mood, focus, and attention.

Different types of THC can create different effects on the body. It’s important to know the different types of THC so you can choose the type of THC that is best for you.

What Are the Different Types of THC?

Five types of THC can be found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. They are delta 8 THC, delta 9 THC, THC-A, THC-V, and THC P.

Let’s take a look at each type of THC and how they are set apart from one another. 

Delta 8 THC

Delta 8 THC occurs naturally in hemp and is legal to purchase when the product contains no more than 0.3% THC on a dry weight basis.

Delta 8 THC has psychoactive properties that users describe as being milder than delta 9 THC. Effects include feeling relaxed, tranquil, and happy. Some users may feel sleepy or drowsy when using delta 8 THC products.

While delta 8 THC can be found naturally in hemp, it is not as prominently found as delta 9 THC. Therefore, delta 8 THC is often synthetically produced in a laboratory so that users can experience the full effect when taking delta 8 THC products. 

Delta 9 THC

Delta 9 THC is the most prominent of the THC cannabinoids. When referring to legal hemp-derived products that contain THC, delta 9 THC is typically the type of THC that is being described.

Delta 9 THC became legal in 2018 when the Farm Bill was signed into law. Hemp-derived THC products may only contain 0.3% or less THC on a dry weight basis. 

Delta 9 THC creates a variety of enjoyable effects within the body. The effects that users most often experience include the following: 

• Tranquility
• Relaxation
• Elation
• Jubilation
• Increased laughter
• Increased mood
• Increased appetite
• Euphoria

THC-A

THC-A is short for tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, and it is the most abundant non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis. THC-A is found in the stems, leaves, and flowers of the cannabis plant. 

For THC-A to be effective in the body, it needs to go through a heating process. This process of heat and light is called decarboxylation, and it causes THC-A to bind to the endocannabinoid receptors in the body. 

If you are interested in trying THC products but don’t want to experience any psychoactive effects, you should try THC-A since there are no psychoactive properties associated with THC-A. You can enjoy a relaxing and calming experience when using THC-A.

THC-V

THC-V is short for tetrahydrocannabivarin and is produced during the breakdown of THC-A. While delta 8 and delta 9 THC is derived from cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), THC-V is derived from cannabigerovarin acid (CBGVA) when exposed to light or heat. 

The effects produced by THC-V are typically much shorter than delta 9 THC products. The effects of THC-V can also be much milder. 

THC-P

THC-P is short for tetrahydrocannabiphorol, and it was only recently discovered in 2019. Once discovered, scientists immediately noticed its intense psychoactive properties. THC-P binds to the endocannabinoid receptors 33 times more often than standard THC, making THC-P 33 times more potent than standard THC. 

Because THC-P can attach to the endocannabinoid system so quickly and securely, it doesn’t take as much THC-P to create a psychoactive effect in the brain as it takes for delta 9 THC. This means the serving size or recommended dosage of THC-P can be significantly less than delta 9 THC. 

Why Did We Not Include Delta 10 as a Type of THC?

Delta 10 is found in extremely small amounts in the Cannabis Sativa plant. Because of this, delta 10 THC typically has to be synthesized with other substances to create a true delta 10 THC product. 

While delta 8 and delta 9 THC products contain THC derived directly from the Cannabis Sativa plant, delta 10 THC products can have additions that may not come from the Cannabis Sativa plant. Because of this, we chose not to include delta 10 as a primary type of THC in our list of THC products. 

How to Choose the Right THC Product

As you have seen from our list of different types of THC, there are different effects that come from the type of THC product you choose. Some types of THC have mild psychoactive properties, while others produce more intense effects. The type of experience you want will determine which type of THC you should choose.

Because delta 9 THC is the most abundant THC cannabinoid found in the Cannabis Sativa plant, it is found in most THC or full-spectrum CBD products. Some products may contain THC-A, THC-V, or THC-P, so it’s important to know what type of THC product you are getting.

If you want a mild experience of THC, we recommend choosing delta 8 THC or THC-A. However, if you want the most intense THC experience, you should choose THC-P. 

Are These Types of THC Products Legal?

Yes! When the Farm Bill was passed in 2018, it legalized all types of hemp-derived THC. The THC product must be derived from industrial hemp and only contain 0.3% or less of THC on a dry weight basis.

It’s important to understand that while THC products are legal to purchase, they can still show up on a drug test. Drug tests are designed to detect THC. If you have taken any type of THC product, you run the risk of the THC showing up on a drug test.
